History provides clues
Previous redness, scale, itching, a wound or treatment in the same location supports post-inflammatory change. Vitiligo often shows more complete pigment loss without visible prior inflammation.
Follow-up
Colour may return gradually. Growth, new patches or an unclear cause should prompt dermatological review.
Editorial basis: current AWMF S2k guideline on the diagnosis and treatment of vitiligo, register 013-093, version 2.0 dated 27 July 2026. Reviewed on 2 September 2026.
