Typical appearance
The skin is lighter rather than chalk white. Fine scale and dryness favour pityriasis alba, while tanning of surrounding skin can make the contrast more visible.
When to examine
A sharply defined, spreading or new white patch deserves assessment. Wood’s light can help judge the degree of pigment loss.
