Making pigment

How melanogenesis works

Melanogenesis is the cellular process that produces melanin inside specialised structures called melanosomes.

In breve

Punti essenziali

  • Occurs in melanosomes
  • Tyrosinase is important
  • Pigment is transferred
  • Process is tightly regulated
01

From amino acid to pigment

Tyrosinase helps initiate reactions involving tyrosine. Additional enzymes and cellular conditions influence the type and quantity of melanin produced.

02

Transfer to the epidermis

Mature melanosomes move through melanocyte extensions into keratinocytes, where pigment contributes to colour and UV response.
