Vitiligo in children

Vitiligo can begin in childhood. Diagnosis should be confirmed and decisions should account for age, body area, activity and the child’s experience.

Medical assessment

Pityriasis alba, birthmarks and post-inflammatory changes can resemble vitiligo. Treatment strength and phototherapy plans must be appropriate for age and site.

School and confidence

Children should help decide what is explained to others. Repeated teasing, withdrawal or school avoidance deserve prompt support.
